Lemon Essential Oil (Citrus limon) is cold-pressed from the peel or zest of the fruit. Cold pressed lemon essential oil contains over 47+ unique components. Main components include: limonene (47.45-67.02%), -terpinene (8.81-13.7%), β-pinene (10+%), ⍺-pinene (1.89-3.35%), myrcene (1.44-1.92%), sabinene (1.6+%), geranial (1.09-2.17%), neral (0.68-1.42%), b-bisabolene (0.44-1.6%).

Due to the high limonene content in Lemon Essential Oil, it is critical that the essential oil is stored properly in a dark container and in a cold room away from sunlight and heat.

Animal Studies

  • Lemon (Citrus limon) essential oil has sedative, anxiolytic and antidepressant activities.
  • Lemon (Citrus limon) essential oil has antioxidant activity.
    Data in this study implied that Citrus limon essential oil, when used as an antioxidant, can protect the hippocampus from the oxidative damage that often accompanies neurodegenerative diseases. Another study also found Citrus limon to exhibit antioxidant activity as well as significant antinociceptive activity.

In-vitro Studies

  • Lemon (Citrus limon) essential oil is a safe and effective penetration enhancer for vitamins held in both water/oil or oil/water emulsions.
  • Lemon (Citrus limon) essential oil exhibits lipolytic (ability to break up fat) activity.

Lemon Essential Oil has a GRAS status and it is safe for internal use. I always have Lemon Essential Oil in the kitchen and like to put a drop in my glass of water for refreshing taste and general body detoxification.

Lemon can be applied directly onto the skin diluted with carrier vegetable oil and can definitely be diffused into the air!
